Driver Information

In order for your GLOWIRE to glow, you must use a driver.  The driver takes a DC input voltage and provides an AC output of approximately 120 volts.  The driver also increases the frequency and therefore the brightness of the wire.

The type of driver you need for your project depends on several things:

  • The amount of GLOWIRE you need to run
  • the input voltage (3V, 9V, 12V)
  • the brightness you desire

Our drivers are listed in the chart below to help you determine which one best suits your needs.  The higher the frequency the brighter the wire and the lower the frequency the less bright.  Although GLOWIRE never burns out, it will become dimmer over time and this is affected by the frequency of the driver.  Typical useful lifetime is as follows: (6 hours on, 18 hours off - reaching 30% of initial brightness).

  60hz 400hz 2000hz 4000hz
Lifetime (hours) 80,000 14,000 4,000 1,600

NOTE: All drivers make a slight humming sound.  This is the audible sound of the frequency and is normal.

Several drivers come with male connectors.  If you want to interface using a connector you will need to purchase a femal connector with your GLOWIRE or purchase a GLOWIRE section with a connector attached.  See the picture description on the online store to determine which drivers come with connectors.
